DECEMBER 1998 MINUTES ARCHIVE
 Thu - Dec 31st - 08:56 am
Wow, new years eve, the dawn of 1999 (...you now have 366 days to stock up on bottled water...).  I hope everyone has a great new years!  I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone for a great year at the Abattoir.  We have much to be thankful for and we appreciate all the support you've given...  We'll continue to dish out the punishment as we approach the new millennium and grow as fast as we can right up till 2000 when the world explodes (...Hahaha...).  Remember, friends don't let friends drink and call.

Back to yesterdays bulletin on the W32.cih.spacefiller virus, Scorpio forwards the official scoop:

This family of viruses, written in South-East Asia, first appeared in June 1998.  Currently there are three known variants; and at least two of these have been found ‘in the wild’.  The viruses infect Windows 95 files in PE format.

Win32/CIH viruses are able to split up the body of the virus code and place it within unused parts of the infected file (PE files usually contain lots of unused space).

The viruses contain a very dangerous payload, which triggers on the 26th of any month.  On this date, they attempt to overwrite the flash-BIOS.  If the flash-BIOS is write-enabled (and this is the case in most modern computers with a flash-BIOS) this renders the machine unusable because it will no longer boot.  At the same time, they also overwrite the hard disk with garbage.

Just a quick note, Scorpio's brought to the Abattoir's attention that the SuperFTP had an infected file on it (...as a matter'o'fact, it F'ed him!..) As since, we've installed Norton 5+ and sure enough, there was a bastard infection.  If you've been anywhere near a file called "CDR35C-E.EXE" watch your ass, it's a real kicker!  As far as the Abattoir's concerned, it's inoculated (...that's a thorough scanning of over 20,000 files...).  Thanks go out to Scorpio who paid the ultimate price, his sacrifice will not go un remembered...  Okay, back to games now! :)

Some one hold me back, I'm going to scream!  Can video driver installations or upgrade be any more annoying then they are today!?  Just thought I'd smack the newer Matrox driver in (...seemed a sound idea to me!?..) Oops, bad plan!  Allow me to make you struggle and reboot 24 times...&*$#%@!!

So, the MeatCAM has turned out to be a hoot, I've modified the cam page again, if anyone can offer help on the Netscape refresh problem, I'm all ears!

Sun - Dec 27th - 06:12 pm
Ho-ho-ho!  Hope you all had a great Christmas, Sgt.Slaughter outdid himself and bought me the Creative Labs WebCAM II USB, so now you get to see our ugly mugs on the Internet Live!  Yup, just for the hell of it, we've intoduced yet ANOTHER useless and purposless WebCAM, Pointing right into Abattoir Control on the second floor, it's the "MeatCAM", it's new, it's fresh, it's completely redundant...  Now a 24 Hr. way to see how much time we both spend of our pathetic lives on the computers!  <GriN!>

 Thu - Dec 24th - 02:15 pm
'Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the Abattoir...  Ahem, Okay, I'm not going wrack my brains trying to match that up into a semi-intelligent verse!  A merry Christmas out to all the Abattoir readers, I hope you all have a safe and happy holiday, don't drink and drive, but if you've pounded a whole bunch back, I'll catch you on the Abattoir...  Shooting under the influence is perfectly acceptable! (...in cyber space folks...).  Happy honica to our Jewish friends (...Abattoir tee-shirts, 20% off for the next 40 minutes... Kiddin'!!..)  Play safe, have a great Christmas!!

 Mon - Dec 21st - 09:42 pm
Whoa!!  a day off work!  How nice is that!?  (...and rare...)  Christmas shopping in high gear... Done I think!  On the Abattoir SuperFTP there's a rare version of Chers' "Believe" called the "Abattoir-Mix", hope you enjoy it (...just a bit of work to make it JUST right! 7.30 seconds of Yummy!..).  Votes are still coming in for BTM6 (...which is shaping-up to be just FINE for 1999...) and the majority have voted Half-Life by no small margin...  (...didn't see that coming!..)  I'm thinking of slapping in an Obsidian2 Card for BTM6, anyone have some input?  (..can you tell the Matrox G200 in the bag downstairs is going to stay there?...  HEY MATROX, YOU GUNNA CALL OR NO?!..).  HumpH!

We have some new Models on the Abattoir for your playing pleasure, John McClaine from Die Hard, Lego Man, Rino, QBot, Mario Bros., Daleks from Dr.Who, Sonic the hedge-spinner, Tigger from Poobear fame, I even found a model of TeleTubbies' "Laa-laa" (..shame, I know who would enjoy that player...).  BTW: If you have a chance to see "A bugs life" get your ass into the theatre, my hat once again flys off to Pixar... (..Oops, I'm not showing my age again am I!?..)

 Thu - Dec 17th - 09:19 am
And the bombs came down on Baghdad...  Way to go Sadam, you stupid bastard!  I awoke to a disturbing 'sight' on the kitchen snack-bar, tell me Sgt.Slaughter's not a bent bastard!  Look at what he did to my Star Trek figures HerbieLoveBug gave me for Christmas a couple years back...  It's a Star Trek Orgy!  I hadda' snap a shot, after I finished laughing my guts out, I'm locking my bedroom door from now on Steve, you sick'o!  (...Oh, whore'Ahhh...).

Feedback time people, let me know what you wanna get into at BTM6, so far on the table we have Q2-DM (...of course...) Rocket Arena and Half-Life.  Keep in mind, all though we go for hours and hours, we don't want to make it a 234 game event (...it just gets stupid at that point!..) Let me know what you prefer!

 Tue - Dec 15th - 10:35 am
Even with a digital camera, It still takes me days to get the screenshots up, what a lazy jerk, huh?  There's only a page, but that's really all the shots we took (...that are worthy of being posted that is...). Rant Time: Just a note to throw out there, I'm getting quite the increase in; "Can I just bring my mouse" kinda' questions regarding the LAN Parties... please people, read up on what a LAN Party IS, it involves you BRINGING YOUR MACHINE, we put a lot of work into hosting these events, and it's great fun, rule of thumb for LAN Parties, the more the merrier, but that involves machines as well!  I can't provide computers, that's just plain insane.  As it stands, Steve and I provide 5, that number's going down to make things easier on us.  I've purchased all the tables and extra supplies so I don't have to spend the entire weekend hauling equipment around, the last thing I need is to have to haul extra computer equipment cuz someone's too lazy to bring their own.  This isn't directed at any one person, so don't take offence, but the amount of mail I'm getting that says to me; "Hey, I'll come, make sure there's lots of food for me, and I like this certain kind of appetizer, and make sure you provide me with a machine that has at least a Voodoo2 card in it, and listen, while I'm at it, do I really have to pay $10?", it's just kinda' annoying!  Just so you know this isn't directed at YOU (...whoever YOU are, who's reading right now...) in the last 7 days, I've had 14 people ask if I could provide them with a machine!  Like I say, it's first come, first server... :p

 Sat - Dec 12th - 11:25 am
The testing's done, and now we're running under 3.20 for Quake2 (...patch available on the SuperFTP, of course...).  Later today, we're going to work on a Dedicated Half-Life server and look into a SiN server (...although there's only been ONE person asking for us to run a SiN server...)  As news would go, we're planning on setting up additional Machines at the Abattoir, more on that later!  <GriN!>

 Thu - Dec 10th - 12:58 pm
The slate's been wiped clean, "Beat the Meat 6" is now scheduled for January 30th!  We'll ring in the new year with a Rocket Launcher to the head and a little Champagne to boot for our first LAN Party of 1999!  Get your names in now and let me know if you're coming out again (...no one has been 'auto-added' to the listing, so you'll have to let me know, or don't bother to show...).

I'll work on the BTM5 Screenshots tonight -- promise.  Sorry for the breakdown of the Abattoir's side navigation bar yesterday, Composer decided to pull major brain-farts and bastardized my HTML code on me, by the time I had UpLoaded it five times only to have it re-bastardize itself, I was already heading toward the window with my monitor in hand...  Anywhooz, all's fixed again and I'm back in therapy.

 Tue - Dec 08th - 06:06 pm
Just in case you've not noticed, BammBamm (...Dave Bamforth...) has placed an AVI up on the Abattoir SuperFTP which clocks in a couple seconds shy of 6 minutes and totes a healthy 19 Meg in weight of some video he shot during BTM5 (...gentlemen, start your cable-modems...)  complete with the 'after the hot-tub shot' of yours truly he was handing around to embarrass me (...wow, there's incentive not to download! Ha!!..)  You'll find it at 'SuperFTP/BTM5/'.  I'll have the Screenshots page updated Wednesday if all goes well with my schedule!  Guess it's time to make the plans for BTM6!  Oh, and Robes is Okay folks...  <GriN!>

 Mon - Dec 07th - 01:09 pm
Another successful BTM LAN Party, thanks to all that came out and played.  Someone let us know if Robes is Okay, I didn't think he'd ever miss one but he was a no-show and we've not heard from him yet! <GriN!>.  Boy, it would have been nice of someone stuck around to help clean-up the Abattoir, just look at this mess!  Hehehe, a nice little 'aftermath' screenshot from Half-Life.  It would appear we've found a new favourite to play.  We found the multiplayer action in Half-Life to be fast-paced and quite the exciting blood-bath to say the least!  (...don't know how many times I became a smear on the walls followed by the flat-line beeeeeep...).  We'll let you know when we're doing it all again, and keep posted to the Screenshots page for updates later on.

 Fri - Dec 04th - 9:21 am
Now that Friday's upon us, tomorrow's BTM5, so out I cast the final plug!  Don't forget, anyone's welcome to come over tonight for the 'early-bird' set-up (...first table choice!..) after 6:30pm.  I'll be checking EMail one last time at around that point, then the Abattoir Server goes 'radio silent' as it's switched over to the Internal cLANetic-Energy network.  The frag fun starts as usual any time after Noon tomorrow, PaK will also give a showing of Lynix for all who are interested (...like me!..) see ya then!
